The Hand of AdamRobert Adam: Architect and Designer The life and achievements of this outstanding Scottish architect and designer set against an exploration of his most outstanding work. The film ranges from the ruins of the Emperor Diocletian's palace at Split, Yugoslavia, which Adam visited in 1757, to his reinterpretation of a Roman palace at Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire, England, and across the Irish Sea to Headfort House to show a selection of Adam interiors. In order to relate Adam's decorative detail to his feeling for interior space, the film-maker devised complex camera movements involving large lighting plans in preference to a series of fragmented shots. The resulting sequences, at Syon House and Osterley Park, are beautifully counterpointed by an inventive musical score. Robert Adam never lost sight of Scotland, and one side of his genius derived inspiration from her great medieval castles or ruins like the peel tower on his family estate in Fife. Throughout his life he designed schemes in the Gothic as well as the classical style - and sometimes a fusion of both. |
