The Baroque of Extremes

The last in this series deals with the manifestations of the Baroque style in Russia and Poland. It begins at the court of Frederick the Great in Potsdam, where Frederick entertained both Voltaire and Johann Sebastian Bach; it moves on to Poland, and then to Russia - both St Petersburg and Moscow are essentially Baroque cities, the former being modeled on Peter the Great's memories of Amsterdam and Versailles. We visit Krakow, with its Wawel Cathedral and mausoleum of Stanislaw, and the monastery of Kalwaria, surrounded by lifesize tableaux of the Stations of the Cross (which can be compared with the Stations at Rimov in southern Bohemia in film 310, Via Dolorosa). The Baroque of Extremes also discusses the largely unknown influence, or perhaps parallel appearance, of the Baroque in Japan.
