All the World on StageThis program gives a stimulating introduction to the Baroque age, opening with an evocation of Louis XIV, the Sun King, ostentatiously dressed for a ballet at the palace of Versailles. We learn of the period's preoccupation with dance, opera, drama and all forms of pageantry. We see the florid sculpture of Bernini (including a bust of Louis XIV), the inventive buildings of Guarini at Turin, the detailed views painted by Bellotto and Canaletto. We chart the spread of the Baroque craze for artifice, fantasy and energy in England, Belgium, Spain and eastern Europe; and we learn about the music, philosophy, science and economics of this paradoxical phase of European history. |
