Germain PilonSculptor of Royal Tombs The universe of sculptor Germain Pilon, the creator of tomb effigies to the French kings, was controlled by the power-politics of the sixteenth century. This film was made for the four-hundredth anniversary of Pilon's death, an occasion for which no conventional exhibition could be mounted, as the majority of his works cannot be moved. They are, however, absolutely representative of his period, when the Renaissance was already in decline and humanism was showing a superficially cultured front, beneath which lay violence, perversion, superstition, and anguish. |
