Beauty in All Its Mystery
Part One deals exclusively with The Adoration of the Lamb polyptych (a picture or relief made up of two or more panels) in St Baaf's Cathedral, Ghent, believed to be the work of both Van Eyck brothers. This masterpiece is often described as an all-encompassing painted inventory of man and his world-view. But the film-makers go beyond iconography: entranced by the glowing vitality of the work, they try to explore the mystery of beauty itself. At the International Monte Carlo Television Festival in February 1990, Part One was honored with the URTI prize. URTI (International Radio and Television University) groups together around fifty official radio and television broadcasters whose objective is to promote the increase of cultural programing on the small screen. The jury praised the quality of direction, the rhythm and the contemplative approach to the work, referring to it as a breakthrough in television viewing.
