StonecarvingThis video-based teaching package is intended for those embarking on a sculpture course. It gives an insight into the practicalities of carving stone and the creation of a piece of sculpture, and will also be of interest to anyone studying art. The video follows the creation of a work by Peter Randall-Page commissioned for a major shopping center in Britain. The work commemorates the European Year of the Environment. Peter describes how the stone is quarried, transported and delivered to his studio. We watch the moving and positioning of the stone and how it is roughed out with a variety of hand and power tools. Peter explains how he finds the form within the stone and scales up from the maquette, or model, and how he develops the work using the angle grinder, punches and points, hammers, claw-tools and pneumatic tools. Finally he refines the form and polishes the surface. The video ends with his thoughts on stone and reviews some of his work in this most enduring material. The booklet expands on the video. `...has strong educational value. Explanations of carving terminology and demonstrations of tool use and safety gear add to the value of this learning experience ... suited for college and adult education classes.'
