Art in the Making: Italian Painting before 1400

Filmed in Siena and at The National Gallery, London, this video examines the methods and techniques of Tuscan panel paintings of the fourteenth century. Using the detailed instruction in Cennino Cennini's Libro dell'Arte (c1397), experts from The National Gallery conservation and framing departments demonstrate the many stages of creating an altarpiece, including making gesso, water gilding, burnishing, pigment grinding, and painting with egg tempera. The demonstrations are linked with paintings by Duccio, Nardo and Jacopo di Cione.

The following book of the same title gives an extensive overview of the subject - an ideal companion to the video.
