Pictures in PicturesThemes and Variations at The National Gallery The paintings featured in this video, all on display in The National Gallery, do not share a theme or subject, they were not painted in a particular period, nor do they come from the same country or region. They do however have one thing in common: the picture within a picture. Pictures in pictures can give an artist the opportunity to imitate other artists` styles, they can provide us with information on the way paintings were once displayed or, like plays, they can pass comment on the main action or subject. They can also allude seriously or playfully to notions of reality and resemblances. Pictures in pictures show artists turning their attention to the very art that they practice. |
