Dreams of Beautiful Japan - Van Gogh and Ukiyo-e

This title is no longer available from the Roland Collection. Details remain on this site for the reference of previous customers.

Le Père Tanguy, one of Vincent Van Gogh's best-known works, is a portrait of the proprietor of an art supply shop in France. In the background of this nineteenth-century portrait we are surprised to see six different Japanese prints, or ukiyo-e, unmistakably featuring Japanese scenes and objects, including cherry blossom, a Japanese courtesan, Mount Fuji, and a cluster of morning-glory. What inspired Van Gogh to include these ukiyo-e in the background of the portrait? This program explores the fascinating relationship between Vincent Van Gogh and the Japan of his dreams, as each of the six ukiyo-e in the background of Le Père Tanguy is traced back through the `Japonism' movement of Van Gogh's Paris to its Japanese origin.
