Maya Terracotta FigurinesMaking images of figures - of people - is one of our most basic instincts. Faces and bodies are the first things the child draws. The objects shown in this film are whistles, bells, ornaments - all shaped into human figures, originating from around what is present-day Honduras. The Mayan peoples who occupied this area around AD 500 depicted in their pottery priests, nobles, dancers, soldiers, musicians, craftsmen - every member of their society. This, like many in the Roland Collection, is an excellent film for the young to make drawings from - recalling as many `types' as they can from what they have seen, or `freezing frame' to copy a certain figure. Young students in any pottery class will also be inspired by the notion of useful everyday objects made in the forms of contemporary characters. There is no narration. |
