Of Leaves and of EarthTraditional Tribal Architecture of the Cameroon Cameroon is a country where men and women continue to construct their own habitats according to ancestral methods and in perfect harmony with the environment in which they live. From the banks of Lake Chad to the great equatorial forest, our guides are French writer André Gide, a pygmy school-teacher, the chief of a mountain tribe, and the sultan of the Kotokos. In addition to architecture, social customs and dance are examined. As well as being an informative documentary, this film is an extraordinary creation of atmosphere. Retracing a route followed by Gide in 1926, with excerpts from a journal and clips of film made on the trip, we gain a unique insight into the fascination and peculiar tristesse that exotic cultures have held for many modern European artists and writers. |
