Fifty, Fifty

1950-60

With the ending of the Second World War and the coming of the new, suspicious atomic age, many comic strips, which had been a valuable propaganda tool during the preceding conflict, began to display an ever more ideological and political bias. The onset of the Cold War proper ushered in the bitter era of McCarthyism and the witch-hunts - the `reds under the bed' syndrome - and neither comic strips nor their authors were to prove altogether immune to this pervasive influence. The film includes interviews with Charles Schulz, Harvey Kurtzman and Mort Walker, and features Peanuts, Beetle Bailey, Dan Dare, Jeff Hawke and Andy Capp.
