Adventures in PerceptionThe Work of the Graphic Artist Maurits Escher The visual puzzles and games of Maurits Escher have a permanent fascination for viewers of all ages. He explores graphic puns and optical illusions, and creates `impossible' illusions which contradict logic and expectation. He plays with all kinds of artistic conventions. In Escher there are elements of Surrealism (see section 18), of the Op Art of Vasarely, and of the self-conscious visual conjuring of Steinberg, though unlike the latter, Escher's sensibility is precise and intricate, rather than relaxed and whimsical. |
