Alvar AaltoThe Finnish architect Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) was one of this century's great reformers in architecture and interior design. Aalto's work demonstrates an intense individualism combined with clear-sighted comprehension of the international architectural trends of his day. A striking characteristic of his work is rationalism, but a rationalism that is sensitive to nature and the place of humanity within it. He considered that architecture must serve people, not theories, and that it is a discipline involving `all fields of human endeavour.' Working often in his native Finland, or with materials originating there, he was adamant that the structures made by and for human beings must be in harmony with the environment, and he was always at pains to use natural substances, such as the wood that is so plentiful in Scandinavia.
