Giovanni Segantini: Life and WorkToday Giovanni Segantini (1858-99) is known, as `the painter of idyllic life.' The frequent reproduction of his paintings in the form of popular prints has contributed to this rather superficial judgment. Yet the appeal of Segantini's work reflects not only a longing for an idyllic world but also a need for harmony and security, for transcendence. This film points up the tension between social reality and an idealized, perfectly balanced, paradisial world. Its starting point is Segantini's last work, Growing - Being - Dying (or birth, life, death). Besides taking the course of life as their subject, these three paintings also follow the course of the seasons and correspond with three places that were crucial for Segantini - Soglio, Scharberg and Maloja. Each still holds memories of Segantini's life, which the film evokes. Segantini was a myth-seeker, and he gave his longings artistic form, one that still fascinates and satisfies a large public.
