Rousseau in Africa: Democracy in the Making

Filmed in Cape Town, South Africa, this programme looks at the changes to the country since Nelson Mandela was elected and how the vote has changed the way people feel about themselves as citizens. The film shows why the previous apartheid system would have been regarded as illegitimate by Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the eighteenth-century philosopher, who argued that people who form themselves into a civil society undergo a 'remarkable change'.
