EtchingThis video introduces us to the artist Sandy Sykes, who works from her studio in Essex, England. She also spends some time at the University of Brighton with Terry Gravett developing an etching in a series about dragons. The creation of this work demonstrates a number of techniques, including basic etching, engraving, drypoint, aquatint and some of Sandy's own processes. We follow these from the initial drawing, through the degreasing, coating of the plate, smoking, tracing, etching and cleaning-off the ground, to the inking and printing of all three plates involved in the production of the final work. The booklet expands on the video. `... a very good illustration of how an etching develops through its various stages. The individual artist will also find this a very helpful introduction to the craft of etching. At each step we are shown the materials and tools needed, reminded of safety factors, and guided step by step through each phase of the project. This video is a class act. Sykes is knowledgeable and personable. Excellent photography makes it easy to follow the informative and logically structured demonstrations. Liberal use of close-ups further clarify the methods presented ... recommended for school, college, and public libraries. As well as providing valuable information for the artist, it will also be of interest as background information on the process of etching to the non-artist.' Video Rating Guide for Libraries, USA |
