Romanesque Architecture of Poitou-CharenteStone, Mystery and Light Several sensational Romanesque churches are explored in this film. Villesalem in Poitiers is seen under restoration, with its outstanding carvings of animals and figures, often depicting virtues and vices. The 100-foot-long Charroux is presented as one of the finest creations of the whole Romanesque period. The narrator, Raymond Ourset, talks inspiringly of his love of the period, and he makes connections with our own day (he cites the architecture of Le Corbusier). Other churches in and around Poitiers which are looked at include St Hilaire, St Radigund, Juan-de-Marnes, Melle, Talmont and Lichères. |
