Romanesque Architecture of BurgundyEve, Stone and the Serpent Approaching the year 2000, this film looks back to the year 1000 for a view of the human condition. Burgundy - destination of pilgrims and cradle of the crusades; a land scattered with churches and shrines, and saturated with vital, often crude faith. In this film we are initiated into the beliefs and ways of the medieval masons who created the Romanesque churches. The central examples of their work here are at Vézelay and Autun, pilgrims' stopping places decorated with fabulous carvings, including those by Gislebertus, one of the few sculptors whose name has come down to us. |
