The semi-detached house has largely been ignored as an architectural form, but that has never affected its popularity with house-buyers. Touring Ilford, near London, we examine the design of suburban houses and the factors that shaped the suburbs - for example, the growth of `estates' and the availability of transport to take their inhabitants to work. In particular we examine and contrast an Edwardian terraced house and a 1928 `semi'; the Edwardian house was built to accommodate servants, and the decoration of the front contrasts with the rougher, cheaper aspect of the back, while the 1928 house is differently planned and relatively undecorated. Perhaps the `semi' has been unfairly neglected by the world of architecture?
