Connell, Ward and Lucas was one of the leading Modernist architectural partnerships in the 1930s. Amyas Connell himself is interviewed about his house `High and Over' in Amersham, which has many features reminiscent of the International Style, but which also has design affinities with Italian villas - Connell reveals that he was influenced by Michelangelo as well as by the International movement. Then we move on to Moor Park in Rickmansworth, designed by Basil Ward, and discuss its design in detail, particularly the use of pilotis and other hallmarks of the modern movement. Finally we ask how far the British public of the time was prepared to accept such modern house designs.
