The Czech architect Adolf Loos was also a journalist and a theorist of art. Most of his work was done in Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland, but he was a great admirer of Britain's and America's social systems and in consequence an admirer of their architecture too. He was capable of adapting ideas from Charles Rennie Mackintosh, for example, to suburban Vienna. His elegant and individual designs were remarkable for their use of space, and sensitive and sophisticated use of materials. We tour some of his shops and houses in Vienna, including the Goldmann and Salatsch store, Knize's Gentleman's Outfitters, and the Scheu and Moller houses.
