Contemporary Mexican Art

This documentary anthology draws on Octavio Paz's extensive knowledge of contemporary Mexican painters. Although Mexican Modernism was inaugurated by the great Muralists Siqueiros, Orozco and their colleagues, it is important to remember that these men were also studio painters, creating in oils, watercolor, sculpture, engraving and other media. And around 1930 another generation of easel painters appeared on the scene, Tamayo and Castellanos being the best known among them. Paz introduces a range of these artists, many of whom are still living, and some newer talents. We see them at work in their studios, and we learn of their affinities and contrasts with both current European art and their own traditional South American heritage.
