A Mental StateThe Works of Wilhelm Freddie The quality of the work of Danish artist Wilhelm Freddie was quickly recognized by André Breton and his circle of Paris Surrealists. For years his work was considered scandalous and caused Freddie many difficulties, particularly during the war when he had to endure the intolerance of the Nazis. He even spent ten days in prison because of the `indecency' of his works. For twenty-five years three of his works were exhibited at the Danish Crime Museum, alongside burglar's tools and underworld weaponry. At the age of eighty-two, however, he looks back at his past without bitterness and recounts his long battle for acceptance by the art world. His works are now exhibited in the most prestigious European and American galleries. `College art history classes would greatly benefit from this video. It might also be used in general history courses.' Video Rating Guide for Libraries, USA In Danish with English subtitles For more information see section 18 |
