Each of these six films visits a different area of France and looks at the variety of architecture to be found there around a thousand years ago, exploring not only the buildings themselves but also the religious beliefs that gave rise to the creations of this fascinating epoch.
'A rich introduction to a cultural and architectural revolution that set fire to Europe... The script explains what lay behind Romanesque art, when man achieved a perfect communion between art and the holy... Marvellous.'
This series... restores to imaginations numbed by innumerable guided tours... a deep sense of a movement that for two whole centuries - and for the first time in history - gave the West a common language...'
'This approach to Romanesque France province by province aims to appeal to the emotional and spiritual dimensions and to combat the ugliness and stupidity of today's world... Each film brings together three characters: a historian, a craftsman or artist, and a director who, eschewing the usual documentary style, applies his own personal stamp. The threefold object being to show Romanesque man and the world around him as they really were, together with his dreams of heaven and earth and his masks with their symbols and ciphers.' Repeated titles occur in the list opposite where the program entry appears in different sections (indicated by the colored prefix number) of the Resource Guide and consequently may have different descriptions and illustrations. |
