Three leading centres of cultural activity in fourteenth-century Italy - Siena, Florence and Padua - are studied in these Open University/BBC videos, which will appeal to those who have an interest in early Renaissance art, the art and cultural legacy of Italy, or late medieval culture and society in general. It is generally claimed that Florence and its artists played a key role in the "Italian Renaissance", and that the achievements of other Italian cities and their artists are less significant. These videos examine critically both the primary evidence and the historiographical traditions that inform such art-historical claims and challenge the traditional view of the ascendancy of Florence by looking equally at the rich and varied artistic legacies of Siena and Padua.
