Visiting an Aztec shrine near his childhood home came as a revelation to Octavio Paz, the writer and presenter of this series on Mexican art. In the earliest program he guides us around sights such as the great pyramids of Tenayuca, Chichén-Itzá and the Coatlicue colossal figure in Mexico City, explaining the complex cosmology of the Aztecs. In later programs he introduces us to the little-known masters of nineteenth-century Mexican painting, and the more widely appreciated post-revolutionary Muralist movement. The final programme focuses on contemporary Mexican painters, showing them at work in their studios and discussing what they owe to their Central American heritage.
