The many controversies to which the modern movement has given birth are reflected in this long and varied series. Aesthetic subjects such as the theories and techniques of Impressionism or the expressive nature of Matisse's work stand alongside more polemical inquiries into feminism in art, the meaning of art criticism (in an interview with Clement Greenberg) or the effect of left-wing politics on the art of 1960s America.
