This series charts the amazing course of Modernism, beginning with Manet and the other Impressionists. Some films are devoted to individual masters such as Monet, Beckmann and Duchamp, while others deal with movements like Surrealism and Cubism which forcibly broke the mold of tradition. The texture of the series is enriched with studies of the artists' techniques and the social and critical milieu against which their often heroic advances were achieved.
