`Hardwick Hall, more glass than wall,' as astonished contemporaries described it, was one of the most innovative houses of its period in Europe. At the same time, it is a typical, though exceptionally well-preserved, English house of the Elizabethan period. The video looks at the factors which influenced its design, the powerful personality of its owner- builder, Elizabeth, Countess of Shrewsbury, or `Bess of Hardwick,' and the brilliance of her architect, Robert Smythson. ![]() Hardwick Hall
