The Mystery of Painting

In the second part, three masterpieces by the younger of the two brothers, Jan Van Eyck, are studied: The Madonna with Chancellor Rolin, The Madonna with Canon Van der Paele and The Marriage of Arnolfini. By comparing these paintings with the Italian School, contemporary Flemish and ancient Egyptian works, the film-makers try to clarify the abstract idea of `style.'
