The Age of Leonardo and Raphael
If European art ever reached its zenith, it was surely in Italy in the period after 1500 known as the High Renaissance. Painters were no longer simply traditional craftsmen; they were men of intellect and vision, and their art expressed the supreme value placed in Renaissance Italy on knowledge - the knowledge of humanity. And yet, though the High Renaissance may have been the finest flower of art to date, a citizen of Florence could have watched it bud and wither in his own lifetime. The following artists are featured: Leonardo, Filippino Lippi, Michelangelo, Botticelli, Andrea del Sarto, Perugino, Raphael, Sebastiano del Piombo, Garofalo, Lorenzo Costa, Correggio, Parmigianino, Pontormo and Bronzino.
