Men of Stone, Men of Faith

`Architecture is the only art where I can enter into the interior ... A master builder, whether he be a monk or a layman ... when he builds a temple, he knows that a kind of hymn will emanate from the internal spaces. I can pray in any temple as long as the architects and builders gave it that rhythm which brings me silence, meditation and peace ... I believe that Romanesque architecture is the most authentic manifestation of the mentality and soul of the people who lived in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Life wasn't funny; when a little bit of happiness was found somewhere it was taken advantage of to the detriment of civil and religious laws. The important thing was not to get caught ... but that was a period when people were straightforward, they sinned heavily, and they repented a great deal!' In such terms the monk Brother Pascal takes us engagingly into the world of Romanesque Alsace, and provides the philosophical and social background for a discussion of the conservation of medieval buildings. Churches looked at include those of Ottmarsheim, Murbach, Epfig, Rosheim, and Neuwiller-les-Saverne.
