Christianity in Russia under the Tsars created art and architecture as spectacular as that produced anywhere else in Europe - icons, church regalia, cathedrals, ornamented gospels and holy books, murals and ceiling paintings on biblical themes ... All are celebrated in this film, which was made in pre-Glasnost Russia but manages to illuminate the historical importance of the religious art of the church fathers of the old regime. The film provides rare images of works and buildings still little known in the West. ![]() St Basil's Cathedral, Moscow
