1975-85 As George Orwell's fateful 1984 drew closer, the arms race gathered momentum and the horizons of the future grew ominously dark. Cruise missiles, SS20s, nuclear power, ecological worries, rising unemployment and ever-shoddier goods at ever-increasing prices all contributed to the sombre Zeitgeist of the times. To the crash of badly tuned guitars, the punk (anti-)movement spread throughout the western world. Meanwhile the old dream of a united Europe took a few hesitant steps forward. European comics of the time naturally reflected these preoccupations. Meanwhile, along with the new recognition of their cultural status, came the eclipse of the importance of the characters in favor of their creators. The film includes interviews with Tanino Liberatore, Horacio Altuna, Enki Bilal and Milo Manara, and features Ran Xerox, Giusseppe Bergman, La Femme Piège, Judge Dredd and Los Pasajeros del Tiempo. ![]() No Future?
