1940-50 Probably the most famous and enduring creation from the comic-strip artist's brush is the super-hero, who came into being in the years leading up to the Second World War. Two conditions of a true super-hero (or heroine) were the possession of special, superhuman powers, and a double identity, usually as an apparently normal, even meek, individual. The (often difficult) maintenance of this vital secret is one of the best-loved pillars of all super-hero plotlines - doing good by stealth in its ultimate form. During the global conflict which followed, the super-heroes joined up on the Allied side and saw much exotic `action,' which, while doing little for the real Allied war effort, contributed solidly to morale by providing favorite reading for many combat soldiers. The film includes interviews with Jack Kirby and Will Eisner, and features Superman, Batman, Spirit, Spirou and Lucky Luke. ![]() Superman
