This program looks at how an old disused railway station in Paris, the Gare d'Orsay, was converted into an important museum housing art from Daumier and Millet to the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists. It also tries to understand the relationship between avant-garde art and kitsch and the reasons for the museum's hanging policy. It enables the student to discover that a museum space is not neutral - there are specific historical and art historical reasons behind the way pictures are hung.
