When the United States became isolated by the Second World War, American art started to find its own way. Influenced by the possibilities represented in the psychic automatism of the Surrealists, a new `frenetic' art was created, based on the `gesture,' on a direct communication between the artist and his canvas. Painting was now `physical,' the best example being Jackson Pollock's action painting. Other painters started action painting as well, and Willem De Kooning added a sensuality to his works that the puritanical society he lived in had previously forbidden, but which he could get away with through Abstraction.
