During the 1880s, when he was already more than fifty years old, Camille Pissarro was forced to reassess and then change the subject of his work. As this appraisal shows, although he did not, or could not, break away from the principles of Impressionism to which he had hitherto given his allegiance - he was the only artist to exhibit in all eight of the Impressionist exhibitions - his increasing commitment to left-wing political ideas altered more than his outlook on life. Now, as a painter of peasants and peasant life, he faced new problems that were both technical and ideological.
