The popularity that the German Prince Consort had never really enjoyed in his lifetime seemed to be lavished on him once he was dead, and the Albert Memorial was Britain's greatest expression of its loss - or was it? Were the details of its decoration and style, and the identities of the 169 lifesized figures from the history of art that are sculpted round its base, over which the seated figure of the Prince presides, really a monument to Albert and his achievements? Or do they tell us more about the society that planned and built the memorial, and its desire to reinforce the image of British supremacy in the eyes of the rest of the world?
