A painter who interested himself in the scientific, technological and philosophical issues of his day, Joseph Wright still needed to sell his paintings in the market-place. Here we examine two of his works in detail: A Lecture on the Orrery (an orrery was a clockwork model of the solar system) and The Alchemist. We also see a demonstration of an orrery and a short sequence of other pictures by Wright in the Derby Art Gallery, plus a discussion of three more of his paintings, The Experiment with the Air Pump, The Blacksmith's Shop, and Hermit Studying Anatomy.
