A founder member of the Royal Academy of Art in London and one of the first women to achieve an international reputation as a painter, today Kauffman is much less well known than her male contemporaries such as Reynolds or Gainsborough. The program traces her early life in Switzerland, her artistic training in Italy and the patronage that brought her to London. It examines her contribution as a history painter to the Neo-classical style of her day.
