From Rubens to Gainsborough analyzes the development of the Baroque in Flanders, northern Europe, and especially France. We look at the Jesuit church in Antwerp, decorated by Rubens, Jordaens and Van Dyck. We visit the palace of Vaux-le-Vicomte built by Louis Le Vau, with gardens by André Le Nôtre. We see Le Nôtre's work again in the Tuileries Gardens stretching before Bernini's façades of the Palais du Louvre in Paris, and, across the Seine, the Hôtel des Invalides with its dome by Jules Hardouin; and in England we visit Wren's Greenwich Hospital and Vanburgh's Castle Howard.
